International Youth Day

Wednesday 12th August was the United Nations’ International Youth Day. On this day, young people, aged between 15 and 24, get involved in various activities and conferences globally to actively encourage positive contributions to their communities. This was a day too good to miss for the Erewash Museum!

Each year there is a different theme for the day. Last year it was Youth and Mental Health whilst this year it was about Civic Engagement - a perfect opportunity for the museum! A group of younger volunteers and museum staff met to create an updated mission statement and youth pledge.

The group looked around the museum to gain ideas as to how we could better engage this demographic and discussion soon started to flow. By the end of the day, after taking inspiration from several different mission statements and youth pledges from
museums around the UK and further afield, the statement began to take shape.

Let’s hope that the ideas and mission statement made by the group will be even more of a success than the day itself.

A very happy International Youth Day!
