Volunteers Week Blog post 3

We are happy to be supporting National Volunteer's Week which runs until 12th June.  This third blog post focuses on how volunteering can contribute toward career development in our sector.

Pursuing a career in museums and heritage can be a daunting task, it can be difficult to find out where to start, what qualifications you need, what different types of work you can do, and how much experience will be required for different job roles.  It's also an extremely rewarding career choice in an ever changing sector and one that attracts people who are inherently passionate about what they do.

Whilst the range of qualifications and job roles may be vast, one aspect of pursuing a heritage career that most people participate in is volunteer work.  Volunteering can help with:

  • Providing much needed hands on experience in the sector
  • Increasing your confidence
  • Learning from other heritage professionals
  • Providing you with a professional reference

You may also find yourself lucky enough to be given a lot of responsibility or exciting projects quite quickly, particularly in smaller organisations with less resources to call on.

Here at Erewash many of our team have had positive volunteering opportunities which have eventually led to jobs in the sector.  Our Learning and Community Development Officer Debbi started with us as a volunteer which gave her a range of experiences and in time a full time job!  Our Museum Manager Helen started her career here at Erewash as a volunteer in 2004!

If you are interested in a career in heritage and would like to talk about volunteering at Erewash Museum please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Rebecca
